Triste - wrong name!

Sometimes you can see name written as S. tectorum - cv. Triste - which is also wrong. This is not a cultivar, it is a species.
There was a species S. triste hort. ex Baker (1879), now included in S. tectorum var. tectorum.

Can't it be an old cultivar of S. tectorum? I suspect that this is also the case for violaceum.
In the past the distinction between cultivars, subspecies, forms and species wasn't always made consistently, which is logical considering the difficulties visiting localities and obtaining study material.
