Re: Uhlig Kakteen
Cohan,
within FEW HOURS after mailing my question to Uhlig Kakteen if they ship to Canada, I got this friendly answer:
Dear Mdm, dear Sir,
yes we ship to Canada! with all needed paperwork as CITES Documents, Phytosanitary Certificate.
You are welcome to visite our webshop: www.uhlig-kakteen.de
If you have trouble ordering (there is a small Eenglish flag in right corner of the web page - to visit their site in English!) mail me, I do understand a little German!

Re: Uhlig Kakteen
thanks renee,
for taking the trouble
i hadnt got around to mailing them...
i have looked at their listings a bit--didnt get as far as semps, yet;
i was amused to see a cactus from peace river,alberta--far north of me (opuntia fragilis, the most northerly occurrence of any cactus), listed as hardy to -20C; they would be very happy in peace river if it didnt go below -20C -- -40 at least is a more likely minimum!
(of course i know the nursery can only have information as good as their source)

Re: Uhlig Kakteen
Well, here in central Slovenia we rarely have temperatures below minus 16 degrees Celsius, so if one write a plant is hardy to minus 20 degrees, that is good for us!
I keep some of my opuntias otside ... Sofar so good.

Re: Uhlig Kakteen
i'm guessing that where the nursery is in germany, they dont have to worry about colder than -20, so that just means its fully hardy for them!
in many places, wet winter is more of a problem than cold winter for many of the hardy cacti; a few opuntias are the most tolerant of wet winter, and probably Maihuenia poeppigii-- a very nice chilean cactus..i am growing some very small ones from seed
my lows can go to around -45C! luckily, we have not been there so far this year--we had temperatures around -30, with windchill around -40...right now its much warmer(+13C tomorrow!), but we will still see some cold before winter is over!

Re: Uhlig Kakteen
I keep all my cacti protected from snow and rain in winter - lots of snow and rain is the reason I can not grow them in garden, but in pots! Now we have temps around zero and no sun for ages ...

Re: Uhlig Kakteen
My winter is sunnier and drier, but much colder..
There are opuntias, escobarias and pediocactus (hopefully) that I can grow outdoors unprotected here..but then I have lots of cacti and succulents indoors all year..
Thats one reason I love semps--succulents that grow outdoors unprotected in this climate
