Navafria in Spain is a habitat of S. cantabricum.

The plant was first described as S. canbtabricum by J.A. Huber in 1934.

Synonims for this S. cantabricum plant are:
- Sempervivum vicentei ssp. paui from Puerto de Navafría No. 1 J. Fernández Casas (1982)
- Sempervivum cantabricum ssp. guadarramense from Navafria

S. cantabricum subsp. guadarramense from Navafria was first collected in the Sierra de Guadarrama at 2.100 m above the sea level by Mark Smith back in 1969 otr 1970 - this plant has a collection number 3858/39.
