Stara planina represents the extreme western branches of the Balkan mountain system which is located in the eastern part of Bulgaria. It extends from Zaječar (Serbia) , in the north to Dimitrovgrad (Bulgaria) in the south, at altitudes from 300 m to 2168 m. It covers an area of 114,332 ha. The highest peak of Stara Planina is Midžor.
