Pots or flower beds? Empty Pots or flower beds?

I wonder why so many people grow semps in pots? Is this the way collectors grow their plants? And garden enthusiast plant them in flower beds or what?

For those who not speak Slovene: Sempervivum Euphoria, you are the third memeber of this forum from Slovenia. If things will go on this way, sooner or latter there will be a Slovene corner for chat and swap.

And now back to your question: I grow my semps and jovis in pots, yes. This is so since the very begining of my coillection. This is the only way for me to keep tracks of plants I have ...

I only have 4 different Sempervivums without names. I dream to have a big collection one day, but how do I start it?

i also only have a few right now; they are in a very big pot, outdoors;
a is have more, i expect to have some in pots/troughs--mostly big ones for better winter protection; large pots are a nice way to be able to see the plants better, a little higher off the ground, and to create small focussed displays..
i will also certainly plant them in rock gardens, with other semps, and with other european alpine plants..
in small pots, i will probably only have plants that i wish to propagate, or that i didnt get planted yet Wink

I grow them in both places. I put as many in the ground as I can, but if I run out of room they go in containers. I also make hypertufa so I like to plant in those containers too.

I only grow in pots due to the heavy clay soil here. Also, it's nice to be able to pick up a small pot for a close up look.
In winter I keep all pots under covers because of the high rainfall, it's the only way to keep them alive.
Anyone else have this problem?

Mine are not protected, with exception of S. atlanticum. There are winters I lose some plants, but than again - the protection would cost me far more than buying those plants again!
