Velenovsky
CULTIVAR NAMED VELENOVSKY ?
Cultivar named Velenovsky can not be found in Europe. However it can be found in USA collections. For example see Arrowhead Alpines
http://www.arrowheadshopping.com/sempervivum-velenovsky-1907.html
So, how to sort this out? Is Velenovsky a real cultivar or just a wrongly labeled Sempervivum?
ABOUT BOTANIST JOSEF VELENOVSKÝ
Prof. Josef Velenovský was a Czechoslovak botanist.
Abreviation: Velen
Born: 22.4.1858 at Čekanicich u Blatne
Died: 7.5.1949 at Mnichovice near Prague, today's Czech Republic
He lived to be 91 years old. His most famous work seems to be Flora Bulgarica – the two books from 1891. The Sempervivum classification was resulted by his field work.
ABOUT SEMPERVIVUMS PROF. VELENOVSKY CLASSIFIED
S. erythraeum Velenovsky 1891 = S. montnum var. erythareum (Velenovsky) Zonneveld 1998
S. wulfenii var. skorpilii Velenovsky 1902 = S. ciliosum subsp. ciliosum
S. montanum Velenovsky 1898 nom. illeg.
S. wulfenii Velenovsky (1891) incorr. name = S. ciliosum subsp. ciliosum
S. x versicolor Velenovsky (1903) = nature hybrid of S. marmoreum x S. ruthenicum
CONCLUSIONS
On my opinion there should not be any doubt of the existance of cultivar named Velenovsky. There isn’t any! After all the cultivar lacks of breeder datas.
However the question remains which of Sempervivums Velenovsky has classified is nowadays wrongly labeled as Sempervivum “Velenevsky”.
There are 4 (or even more?) possibilities:
S. erythraeum
S. ciliosum subsp. ciliosum
S. montanum nom. illeg. (not to be confused with S. montanum as we know it today!)
S. x versicolor
From the photo of Arrowhead Alpines we can rule out S. ciliosum subsp. ciliosum because the plant on the photo lacks the distinct hairs on the edge of leaves.

Velenovsky
Hi Renata. Hope you can help me with my confusion over Velenovsky. It is sold here in the US by Squaw Mountain Gardens. http://squawmountaingardens.com/
To me it doesn't look like either a marmoreum or a montanum. It is a very lovely semp. Have you found any other information on this one?

Re: Velenovsky
Sorry, I'm still trying to figure it out!
Velanovsky aka Velanovski in culture is labeled as hybrid of an unknown origin. That's the only thing that's sure.
