Caucasian houseleek - Sempervivum caucasicum - grows there.

Under the photo it is written:

The plants on the rocky hillside cliff. Republic of Karachaevo-Cherkessia, Dombai, the upper valley. Alibek, 2100 m a.s.l.

Extremly long stolons are visible on the photo. Can someone please explain why do some S. caucasim plants have short stolons, the other but very long ones. Thank you!
