S. arachnoideum is native to Mötltal, Carinthia, Austria.

There are actually two known localities there:

1. W-exposed side of the valley 0.7-1.2 km NNE Putschall; elevation from 1.100 to 1.250 m a.s.l.

2. W-exposed side of the valley about 1 km NNE Putschall; elevation from 1.250 to 1.350 m a.s.l.

About the name: "Tal" is a German word meaning "valley".
