J. arenaria was first described by Koch, and later in 1852 by Opiz.

This is a plant native to:
- Austria
- Slovenia
- and Italy.

It grows on south to south est Alps and Karavanke = Carinthia Alps = Kärtner Alpen mountain range.

It has very small, globular rosettes, green, orange and red. Rosettes are from 0,5 to 2 cm in diamether which makes this plant a little jewel of every collection.

It grows best in a very well drained soil and benefits from some protection from winter damp.

Some synonims:
- S. hirtellum
- Praeger in 1932 = S. arenarium
- Jovibarba globifera ssp. globifera.
