S. altum - in general

This species grows in the Caucasus Mountains and it has medium size offsets.

This plant is in my collection since 2005.



As you can see in the next photo this plants produces long stolons

Wow--this plant looks very different in my climate!! Lets see if I succeed in attaching a pic today, I failed last night...
No, failed again--can someone remind me how the image hosting thing works, I can't get it to do anything, keep getting the same window over and over..?!

Try copying image location (middle row). Don't click ''copy'' button. Click right click and select copy.

My and Txemari's plant also look different to me. True, my plant
is much smaller (and younger it seems)

That's (if I'm remembering right...) what I did, copied that one... Could also be my internet connection which sometimes is spotty and things don't work right...lol

Looking at them now, I realise that this species has not grown much (at all?) since I got it.... I wonder if this one would like something different--more heat? more/less sun? more drained soil? Several other semps in the same community pot have grown nicely..
Note: my season is short and cool in general, and the last two summers were cool by our standards, even, so it is not unusual for plants to make smaller more closed rosettes in my climate, and to retain more colour in summer than they do in hotter places.. Pics from early May and lmid Sept will be times when plants are experiencing regular frost...

My plant seems to be good grower for now and i hope it will stay this way.
I also have some species that didn't move more than 2 years. I tried to put them in another tipe of soil. Hope this will work.
You can also take one rosette and try to put in different conditions.

I think that your climate is great for growing Sempervivums. Our summers are so hot that plants shrivel and some of them tend to die at this part of year.

I'm also interested in that white sand around your plant. Is this granite or one of those modern/expanded/synthetic materials? I saw the same thing at some other growers.

Thanks, Marko-- Hopefully I will get my rock garden (or at least one built this year, and can put most semps in the ground, except maybe for some 'fun' pots...
One thing I don't have to worry about is a too hot summer...lol, should be good for many alpines however, for some things that need heat, I will be trying to make some beds with a bit of wall (rock or concrete blocks or wood even) behind them to hold more heat...

I think the stone is granite--it is sold as grit for chickens--comes in several sizes, sort of white with black veins..; I do not use perlite--I hate the way it rises to the surface and looks ugly, and might occasionally use vermiculite, but mostly in seedling pots..
