In vol. 11 (1980) of The Sempervivum Society Jurnal, describing S. cantabricum localities, Siegmund Boehme wrote:

"La Mata de la Riba
. In the middle of the village of La Mata de la Riba, about 25 km north of Leon, on the wall of a farmhouse, extremely large, cultivated cushions, up to 1 m in diameter. Source, according to the occupant: "from the mountains". Height of location unknown, but certainly below 1000 m above sea level."
