Cohan, they are hard to get for an uknown reason. Nobody (except us! :bounce: ) seem to have interest in them.

If this plant survioves the very damp winter we have ... I can mail you a cutting in summer! Just remind me to send it!

i guess without the fancy colours of some semps, they dont get the same attention ..i do see some regularly in apline catalogues (alpine growers like all kinds of strange and small plants, thats why i love their lists...lol)-- a few rosularia (i think the genus is divided up, now) and related genera, some hardy sedums (some nice things there--besides the big flashy commercial ones) and orostachys--but usually not very many different ones(except sedum)....

here is a nice page about rosularia.... this is a nursery in england, so when they say 'winter protection' they mean protection from wet..
i'm not clear yet whether they SELL any of these...lol

Love both genera! I don't know why are they so unpopular...maybe because of the mess with their names. :scratch:

They need much more care than semps do!

No problem in Belgium and we have a humid winter.

They are hardy, but they can not stand damp conditions here in Ljubljana (rain and snow and fog day after day all winter long!)

I'm sure you have sunny days, Cromaphyto. I have had 2 - 3 hours of sun in Ljubljana this year - and mind the date (14th January!!!). The rest of time we've had rain, snow and cloudy weather!

This is my first year to have Rosularia and Orostachys. I am hoping I can get them through our Pacific Northwest wet winters and spring.

a report--i had a small piece or two from olivier, summer of last year, of Prometheum (Rosularia) aizoon; i was unable to find out whether this plant should be hardy in my very cold (usda zone 2-3 = -30C guaranteed, a number of times, and probably -40C/-40F at least once or twice in a winter),
so, since i had it growing in two large mixed pots, i brought one small clump indoors, and kept one outside;
the plant indoors survived, but was etiolated all winter, even though i did not water much; this fall, i watered it more in fall, more like winter grower, and it looks better at this moment, still not as nice as plants outside;
the plant outside, in a communal pot with semps, sunk into the soil for winter (pots cannot be left standing outside over winter here) survived and looked very good in spring, and did fine all summer (a somewhat cool and damp summer this year)..
they still remain, one outside and one inside, we will see what another winter brings....
i also have some seed to sow of a couple of rosularias, from habitat collected seed; they are available on a couple of the czech alpine seed lists..i can give details if anyone wants..
i still have not found any source for anything but the most common orostachys species :(

cohan, how do you start the seed, and when? I would love to try that.
I have these Orostachys. This will be my first winter with them.

Orostachys fimbriata
Orostachys furusei
Orostachys spinosa

i am no expert, since i have not yet grown these seeds, should be about like semps and most crassulaceae, though--easy warm germinators; if you have lights indoors you can start them anytime, otherwise start them when its warm outdoors in spring..
the seed should be quite fine, so i would not bury-- a pot of well drained soil, cover surface with grit and sprinkle seed over so it goes into grit a bit, but is not really covered, spray or water lightly to make sure seed contacts soil, and probably cover til germination at least--i usually put pots into ziplock bags--this works under lights, if in sun, you will need a more open arrangement as pots/seedlings would bake enclosed in sun...

This spring i tried to sow O. spinosa seeds in the pots outdoors but the birds turned over those pots...

I also had one Rosularia unprotected last winter and i almost lost it. I saved only small part. I live in about zone 6. This spring i got more species and they will also be outdoors this winter but they will be protected from the rain and snow.

Cohan, please let us know how will you do with Rosularia seeds.

Velleylinn, it's kind a hard to find in Europe some of the Orostachys that you have. I'm very interested in O. eburnifolia. Do you have pics? Google tells me that it looks like O.japonica, erubescens or fimbriata
Maybe you could start new topic about your species in Orostachys subsection.

I also have few Rosularia and Orostachys species and also will have first winter with most of them. I will see how will they do in spring, so maybe we could arrange exchange.

Narcoleptic, I am not sure how to start a new topic, as I am new to this site. I do have photos.
I am finding so far the ones doing the best are in pots under a roof, so do not get the rain. We are in just the beginning of winter her and have 23°F. I was told they like to be on the dry side in cold weather.

Lynn, How did they survive? I have R. pallida and it has survived 2 winters here in the northeast. I've started R. sempervivum, R. rosulata and R. turkestanica from seed. We'll see how they do.

I also have a few mostly unnamed species and they seem to overwinter well. I kept them dry only.

Mark, could you please write more about sowing Rosularia seed.
Is it the same method you used for Orostachys?
I'm looking forward to your photos.

Have to fix my camera then I'll post photos. I did the same as the orostachys. I started them in mid february and they are still very small but looking healthy.

Hi Mark. All of my Rosularia are doing very well in spite of the constant rain all winter and into spring.
The only one having trouble is Rosularia sempervivum ssp glaucophylla. I am afraid to dig it and move it right now. When things dry out I will pot it and move it where it won't get so much rain next winter.

I don't remember how to add photos otherwise a would post a photo taken this month. Very sad indeed. : (

Would also like to post photos of the ones doing well.
