A person with a very vivid imagination described a "new species" named S. califonicum - read more here:

The description in the site is wrong :
A very handsome species, with broad hemispherical rosettes, composed of oblong, glaucous, brown-tipped leaves, terminating in an abrupt sharp point. Flowers purplish, composed of twelve or more spreading petals, appearing from June till August.

Flowers for S. calcareum are yellow.

S. californicum Baker is a synonym for S. calcareum Jordan
See here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sempervivum_calcareum

In a new description , you can to choose any word that you will. If you want to choose S. slovenium or S. belgium, you can without problem.
The name is the least important thing in a description. This is not a problem. Sometimes, the authors show great imagination!

S. californicum was used for the first time by Baker in 1874 - he used a horticultural name.

John Gilbert Baker (1834 -1920) was an English botanist - read more here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Gilbert_Baker

Since Sempervivum is not native to USA - what the heck was ment by "californicum"?! I guess we will never know.

Yes, S. californicum Baker was later included what we know now as S. calcareum Jordan.

Theye people using name S. californicum "stepped" more than 150 in history and I was just wondering how on earth they "found" this name! the description of plants is also very "poetic" or shall I say very freely.
